The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa Area Command, has recorded a major milestone in its transit operations with the arrival of its first-ever transit container from the Ports and Terminal Multiservices Limited (PTML) Terminal, using an electronic cargo tracking system to monitor the consignment from the port of landing to Kano.
The container arrived at the Command on Friday, 14 August 2026, after leaving the PTML Terminal on 10 August, with the Acting Customs Area Controller, Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Usman Adamu, describing the development as an important step in the Service’s transition towards technology-driven cargo monitoring and transit management.
“This is a particularly important milestone for us because, for the first time in the history of the Command, we are receiving a transit container from the PTML Terminal. This achievement is further strengthened by the deployment of an electronic cargo tracker, which enables real-time monitoring of cargo from the port of landing to its destination.” DC Adamu said.
He said the container completed the journey in four days, adding that the development demonstrated the effectiveness of the electronic tracking system in providing visibility throughout the transit process.
According to him, the Service commenced deployment of the electronic cargo tracking system in the third quarter of 2025, while the Kano/Jigawa Command had, with the arrival of the consignment, received its 194th container fitted with the e-cargo tracking system.
DC Adamu further explained that the technology would strengthen cargo security by enabling Customs to monitor consignments throughout their movement, noting that the electronic seal was designed to trigger an alert whenever there was an unauthorised attempt to tamper with a container.
Also speaking, the Modernisation Project Manager, Zone B, Assistant Comptroller of Customs Ummaru Aliyu, said the electronic cargo tracker was introduced to replace the traditional manual escort system and improve accountability, security and efficiency in the movement of transit cargo from the mother ports.
The Managing Director of Dangwauro Terminal, Mark Onyeama, commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for introducing the technology, describing it as a significant step towards improving cargo security and operational efficiency, acknowledging, “The measures introduced by the Acting Area Controller to streamline transit processes had improve accountability and security at the terminal.”
