Northern Reconciliation Group Raises Alarm over Rising Insecurity in Northern Nigeria
The Northern Reconciliation Group (NRG) has expressed deep concern over the escalating wave of violent attacks, abductions, kidnappings, and banditry affecting several states across Northern Nigeria, warning that the situation now constitutes a regional and national security emergency.
In a press statement jointly signed by Dr. Joseph Lengmang, Pro tempore Secretary, and Prof. Usman Yusuf, Pro tempore Spokesperson, the non-partisan group said communities across rural and semi-urban areas continue to face fear, loss of lives, displacement, and the destruction of livelihoods due to persistent insecurity.
The group extended its solidarity to victims of violent attacks and affected communities, noting that the recurring tragedies threaten not only human lives but also the social cohesion of the region.
According to the NRG, the protection of life and human dignity remains the most fundamental responsibility of governance. It stressed that the scale and persistence of insecurity in the region should no longer be treated as isolated or localized incidents.
“The situation demands urgent, coordinated, and humane responses,” the group said.
As part ofi ts recommendations, the NRG called for intensified, lawful, and intelligence-driven operations to secure the release of abducted persons and dismantle criminal networks. It also urged the decisive implementation of enhanced security measures and early-warning systems aimed at protecting vulnerable communities.
The group further emphasized the need for renewed commitment to justice, accountability, and community-driven approaches to rebuild trust between citizens and state institutions.
The NRG said its appeal was made in the spirit of unity and shared responsibility, stressing that human security must rise above all divisions. It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace-building efforts through inclusive dialogue aimed at restoring safety, dignity, and lasting peace across Northern Nigeria.
