Muhammad Atiku Abubakar, son of Nigeria’s former Vice President and Chairman of the Atiku Support Organisation (ASO), has formally resigned his membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), expressing disappointment over what he described as the party’s descent into irrelevance under its current leadership.
In a letter dated Tuesday, 8th July 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Jada 1 Primary Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Muhammad tendered his resignation with “a deep sense of regret,” citing a long-standing frustration with the direction of the party.
“As a card-carrying member of the PDP for a number of years, I have tried hard to galvanise youth groups in particular towards promoting the PDP and its candidates across various levels.” Muhammad stated.
He said, “The PDP’s transition from glory to ignominy will go down in the annals of our country’s history as one of the greatest misfortunes in our democratic journey.”
He accused the Ambassador Iliya Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) of contributing to the party’s current woes, describing it as “the single biggest contributor to what has befallen PDP; the greatest exodus in its existence.”
While he acknowledged the efforts of a few “patriotic” NWC members who have continued to challenge the prevailing leadership style, he made it clear that the party had lost its foundational ideals of patriotism and nationalism, becoming “a shadow of itself.”
It would be recalled that his father, Atiku Abubakar, the PDP Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election, had recently joined forces with other political heavyweights to form a new coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a bid to reconfigure the country’s political landscape.
However, it is not yet known whether Muhammad Atiku will follow suit by pitching his tent with the ADC, or if he has other political plans ahead.
