SSR Auwalu Sani Rogo Apologises to Journalist Over Public Insult
An official of the Kano State Government, SSR Auwalu Sani Rogo, has formally apologised to a member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abdulbaki Ali Ahmed Sharifai, following a public altercation in which the journalist was allegedly insulted.
The apology was tendered on Wednesday during a reconciliation meeting held at the office of the Commissioner, Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya.
The meeting was attended by members of the Kano Online Media Chapel Executive Council, led by its Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Abdulƙadir Dangambo, alongside directors of the ministry and a veteran journalist and former NUJ chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Datti Arzai.
Speaking at the meeting, Commissioner Waiya emphasised the importance of maintaining a cordial and mutually respectful relationship between government officials and media practitioners. He noted that journalists play a critical role in promoting transparency and informing the public about government policies and programmes.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with media professionals in the interest of peace, accountability, and development.
In his remarks, Dangambo commended the commissioner for his timely intervention in resolving the dispute, describing the incident as unfortunate.
He urged public office holders to understand and respect the responsibilities of journalists in a democratic society.
“We are partners in progress towards nation-building, especially in a democratic dispensation,” he stated.
The incident reportedly occurred during the Argungu Fishing Festival, where the SSR was said to have publicly directed offensive remarks at the journalist.
