Kano Customs Training College Undergoes Major Renovation as Commandant Highlights Strategic Engagements

The Commandant of the Customs Training College, Goron Dutse, Kano, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Umar Atiku, has said the ongoing transformation of the institution is anchored on his resolve to justify the confidence reposed in him by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

DC Atiku made this known on Friday, 27 February 2026, during a media chat at his office, where he spoke on infrastructural renewal, institutional reforms and stakeholder engagement since assuming duty in October 2025.

He described his appointment as a weighty responsibility, noting that leadership within a strategic training institution of the Nigeria Customs Service demands measurable progress.

“When you are entrusted with leadership among very senior officers, you must show results. My focus has been to ensure that the College aligns fully with the reform agenda and vision of the present administration of the Service.” DC Atiku said.

The Commandant commended the Comptroller-General for what he described as prompt and consistent support, revealing that key requests submitted to improve the College had received approval.

According to him, this includes the provision of a coaster bus to enhance mobility and authorisation to convert an existing facility into an indoor sports complex to strengthen welfare and recreational activities for officers and trainees.

He disclosed that the Training and Staff Department recently conducted an assessment visit to evaluate ongoing improvements and recommend additional areas of support, describing the exercise as encouraging.

“Within four months of my administration, the College has witnessed extensive infrastructural upgrades. The Administrative Block has been renovated and repainted, lecture halls and classrooms refurbished, and damaged classroom furniture repaired and replaced.” He said.

Other key areas renovated, according to him, were students’ hostels, the College Clinic which was upgraded with new hospital beds, Computer Centre, College Hotel to enhance accommodation standards, and students’ kitchen to enhance broader welfare of the students.

He added, “These interventions are deliberate. Training requires a conducive environment. When facilities are improved, discipline and learning standards are strengthened.”

DC Atiku noted that environmental sanitation was prioritised immediately upon his assumption of office, leading to comprehensive clearing and cleaning of the premises to restore order and create a more professional atmosphere.

He added that the College gate and perimeter fencing have also been upgraded to enhance security and improve the overall outlook of the institution.

Speaking about forging partnerships with sister security agencies, the Commandant said the College has deepened collaboration with various bodies and key stakeholders in Kano through courtesy visits and sustained engagement.

He explained that such interactions have strengthened working relationships and improved synergy in line with the Service’s policy thrust on collaboration.

He further revealed that construction of additional hostel accommodation blocks is ongoing following renewed administrative follow-up, while attention is being given to other pending projects to ensure their timely completion.

Reaffirming his commitment to capacity building, DCC Atiku said the goal remains to reposition the Customs Training College, Goron Dutse, as a modern and disciplined training institution capable of delivering quality instruction to officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service.

“Our responsibility is to build a College that reflects the standards and aspirations of the Service. We are determined to leave it better than we met it.” He said.
