COWA Flags Off Free Eye Care Outreach in Abuja, Commits to Customs Family Welfare

Date:

In a bid to advance the welfare of Customs families and promote preventive healthcare, the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) on Monday, 7th July 2025, launched a week-long free eye care outreach at its National Secretariat in Gwarinpa, Abuja.

The initiative, which is being held in collaboration with Skipper Eye-Q Eye Hospital, offers free eye screenings, health education, and prescription glasses to officers, their spouses, and members of the wider security community.

The outreach is scheduled to run until Friday, 11th July 2025.

Declaring the programme open, the National President of COWA and wife of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi, reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to improving the lives of Customs families through health-focused interventions and strategic partnerships.

“This programme goes beyond health; it is about care. It is about showing the families of Customs officers that their wellbeing matters, and that we recognise the sacrifices they make daily,” she said, while applauding the support of Skipper Eye-Q in making the outreach a reality.

The outreach drew wide attendance from sister security organisations, with representatives from the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), Nigerian Air Force Officers’ Wives Association (NAFOWA), and the Police Officers’ Wives Association, among others, who joined COWA to commission the mobile eye clinic stationed at the venue.

Health talks were delivered by medical professionals from Skipper Eye-Q, who used the opportunity to enlighten attendees on key eye conditions and preventive habits.

Dr. Tochukwu addressed the dangers of retinal degeneration, stressing the importance of regular eye check-ups and cautioning against excessive screen time and self-medication.

He linked unmanaged blood pressure to sight deterioration and encouraged proactive health management.

Dr. Gladys Njokwu took the audience through the causes, symptoms, and preventive options for cataracts, while Dr. Patience John, who led the medical team, offered a detailed explanation of glaucoma, urging participants to seek early detection and treatment.

Soon after the flag-off, free eye screening and consultation began with attendees from the sister organisations before extending to Customs officers and their families.

Daily Feeds Nigeria learnt that the mobile clinic, equipped with modern diagnostic tools, will remain stationed throughout the week to ensure optimal access.

In her vote of thanks, the COWA National Financial Secretary, Mrs. Funsho Olomu, described the outreach as another impactful step under Mrs. Adeniyi’s leadership.

“We are proud of this direction—health is wealth, and today, COWA is investing in the health of our people.” She said.

The programme is part of a broader commitment by COWA under Mrs. Adeniyi to integrate welfare, healthcare, and empowerment as pillars of its outreach, especially for families of those serving on the frontlines.
