The Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), Alhaji (Dr) Umaru Kwairanga, has called on the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) to redouble its efforts toward the passage of the CISI Bill and find innovative ways to attract younger Nigerians into the stockbroking profession.
He made the remarks on Wednesday, 24th April 2025, at the Institute’s Annual General Meeting held at the Stock Exchange House, Marina, Lagos.
In his goodwill address, Kwairanga praised the President of the Institute, Mr Ropo Dada, and the Governing Council for what he described as “another momentous year in office, and clearly visible in the annual report.”
“I am particularly impressed with the establishment and entrenchment of district societies across the country. These and your consistent advocacy efforts have not only deepened the relevance of the Institute but also enhanced its visibility and public image.”
Kwairanga emphasised the need for legislative action to institutionalise the profession: “One of the critical challenges we must now face squarely is the passage of the CISI Bill into law. This Bill, once passed, will serve as a cornerstone for strengthening the practice and regulation of our noble profession.”
He also highlighted the importance of generational renewal within the profession, stating, “We must find creative ways to increase our appeal to the younger generation. The future of the capital market rests in their hands, and we must begin to prepare them today.”
On a more personal note, Kwairanga expressed appreciation for his recent co-option into the Institute’s Governing Council, describing it as an honour.
“This is and will always be my primary constituency. I promise to always put in my best for the good of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers.” He affirmed.
The AGM brought together leading figures in Nigeria’s financial and investment landscape, serving as a platform to assess the Institute’s progress and refine its roadmap for the future.
