Kano Assembly Gives Deputy Governor Two Weeks to Respond to Allegations
The Kano State House of Assembly has given the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, a two-week ultimatum to respond to a series of allegations leveled against him or face further legislative action.
The decision followed the presentation of four allegations against the deputy governor, including claims of misappropriation of public funds, failure to properly discharge the duties of his office, and other related issues.
Briefing journalists after plenary on Wednesday, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Lawan Husaini Dala, explained that the action of the lawmakers was in line with Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers a State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against a governor or deputy governor.
According to him, 38 out of the 40 members of the Assembly endorsed the notice directing the deputy governor to respond to the allegations and appear before the House within two weeks to defend himself.
The motion to issue the notice of allegations was moved by the member representing Dala Local Government, Lawan Husaini Dala, and seconded by the member representing Kabo Local Government, Labaran Ayuba Durum.
Dala further stated that failure by the deputy governor to respond to the allegations within the stipulated period would empower the Assembly to proceed with the next constitutional steps.
He emphasized that the Assembly was acting within its constitutional mandate in handling the matter.
