Kano State Government to Open Voter Registration Centres in Universities and Tertiary Institutions


The Kano State Government has announced plans to open voter registration centres in universities and other tertiary institutions across the state.

The government also called on young people who have attained the age of 18 to come out and register to vote.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, made the call during a press briefing held at the ministry’s headquarters. Comrade Waiya, who also serves as Chairman of the Kano State Voter Registration Awareness Committee, said the government would focus on Almajiri schools and secondary schools to ensure that all eligible youths who are 18 years and above are registered.

He noted that since 2025, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has opened opportunities for continuous voter registration, including the registration of citizens who have reached the age of 18, as well as the updating of voter records.

The commissioner added that preparations are at an advanced stage to open voter registration centres in the two state-owned universities in Kano, as well as other tertiary institutions across the state, to guarantee the success of the exercise.

He recalled that in 2025, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, inaugurated a strong committee made up of commissioners, special advisers, community leaders, and journalists, under the leadership of the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs.

The committee was tasked with sensitising and mobilising residents of Kano State to participate in the electoral process by obtaining voter registration cards.

According to him, the initiative has already begun yielding positive results, as Kano State has moved from 22nd position to 2nd position nationally in terms of new voter registrations.
