The Nigerian Customs Service has broken silence following the occurrence of a tragic incident that took place between two customs officers in Garki Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Friday.
Daily Feeds learned that, a Customs personnel, name withheld, has allegedly fired a bullet at one Muhammad Sayyadi, who unknowingly, was also an officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, after the victim failed to stop for a proper identification at the checkpoint on Friday the 26th of May 2023.
According to a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Kano/Jigawa Area Command, SC Nura Sa’idu, and obtained by Daily Feeds, the Service regretted the occurrence of the accident – and vowed to investigate the incident to determine the causes and circumstances.
“We regret the unfortunate incident that took place on Friday the 26th of May 2023 at Garki Local Government Area of Jigawa State. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this tragic event, and we extend our deepest empathy to the family and friends of the victim.” The statement said.
The Service also said that it is committed to ensure the well-being and safety of the victim, who at the time of compiling this report, is receiving treatment at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, and extended its deepest empathy to the family and friends of the victim.
“We would like to remind everyone that the Service rests utmost importance on responsible firearm handling. Accidental shootings are preventable tragedies, as all officers are consciously trained to secure and only use their firearms in appropriate and controlled environments.” SC Nura Sa’idu said.
He said the Service will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.
