The National Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Chief Superintendent of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada has said that some of the landmarks achievements of the service under the leadership of the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd.) CFR l, are trade modernisation project,
completion of Nigeria Customs Service Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, the repeal of the Customs and Excise Management Acts to what is now the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.
According to him, the law is over 63 years, so it was repealed and replaced with a new legal framework which will allow the service to perform its functions in line with 21st century Customs.
The NPRO made this known to journalists and stakeholders in the Maritime industry at a 2-Day Retreat organised by the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) in Badagry on Thursday, with the theme, “Enhancing Capacity/Efficiency in Modern News Reportage”.
CSC Maiwada, pointed out that based on performance, the Nigeria Customs service is doing better than some of their foreign counterparts.
He said, “Compared to other developing countries, we are doing well and we’ll continue to improve on effective service delivery, trade facilitation and capacity building”.
“Because of the importance of training and doctrine (TRADOC), a separate formation was Created to supervise the activities relating to the doctrine and training needs of the Service and we have a Deputy Comptroller General of Customs who is the 7th member of the Board of the Nigeria Customs Service. This gave birth to a lot of training and retraining, so Customs now trains both nationally and internationally”. He noted.
“We all know about the trade modernization projects which are coming up to bring about an end-to-end automation of the whole processes and procedures of the Nigeria Customs Service”. He added.
