…As DC Adamu Frowns at Illegal Wildlife Traffickers, Poachers
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa Area Command, has intercepted a live lion cub and arrested two male suspects over alleged involvement in illegal wildlife trafficking within Kano metropolis.
Addressing journalists on Friday, 20 February 2026, at the Customs House, Bompai, Kano, the Acting Customs Area Controller of the Command, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Usman Adamu, described the operation as a major breakthrough in the fight against wildlife crime.
Adamu disclosed that the rescue followed credible intelligence received from Focused Conservation, which prompted a joint operation between officers of the Kano/Jigawa Area Command and the Special Wildlife Office of the Customs Intelligence Unit at the Service Headquarters.
“Today, 20 February 2026, I am pleased to inform you of the successful rescue of one live lion cub and the arrest of two male suspects in connection with illegal wildlife trafficking.” He said.
He explained that wildlife trafficking contravenes Section 55(1) of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, which mandates the Service to enforce relevant international laws, conventions and agreements on the trade of endangered species of fauna and flora under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
According to him, acting swiftly on the intelligence, officers intercepted the suspects within Kano metropolis and secured the endangered animal before it could be trafficked out of custody.
“The lion cub is currently in safe custody and will be handed over to the appropriate wildlife conservation authorities for proper care and rehabilitation before it is released back into the wild in the near future.” DC Adamu stated.
He added that the two suspects are presently in custody and would be prosecuted in accordance with extant laws.
The Acting Area Controller said the interception underscores the Command’s commitment to combating wildlife crime and protecting endangered species, stressing that the Nigeria Customs Service remains resolute in dismantling criminal networks involved in illicit wildlife trade.
“We warn all individuals involved in illegal wildlife trade that the Nigeria Customs Service remains vigilant and will continue to collaborate with relevant partners to bring perpetrators to justice.” He said.
Adamu commended officers involved in the operation for their courage and professionalism, noting that their prompt response prevented what could have been a successful act of environmental crime.
He also expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and the Service’s Management Team for their approval and sustained support in strengthening enforcement activities across Commands.
According to DC Adamu, the rescue of the lion cub symbolises the ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Customs Service to enforce both domestic legislation and international conventions aimed at protecting endangered wildlife and preserving biodiversity.
