Renewed Hope Agenda Faces Crisis in Kano Over Alleged Hijack of Appointment Process
The implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in Kano State has reportedly suffered major setbacks following allegations of political interference and unilateral control of the programme’s structure in the state.
The Renewed Hope Agenda designed to enhance job creation, security, infrastructure development, education, healthcare and digital expansion across all wards and local governments was expected to operate through an inclusive and transparent coordination system nationwide.
However, political tensions have emerged in Kano after claims that the initiative has been hijacked by Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin.
Multiple insiders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) allege that Senator Barau has overridden established procedures and sidelined key party stakeholders in the appointment of coordinators and programme officials. The move, they say, has stalled the full rollout of the Agenda in the state, leading some party members to describe it as “dead on arrival.”
According to the national framework, Governor Hope Uzodimma serves as National Coordinator of the Renewed Hope implementation structure, while Malam Salihu Sagir Takai was appointed Kano State Coordinator.
The system was expected to cascade to local governments and wards. Party sources, however, claim that this arrangement has been disrupted in Kano by what they call a “hostile takeover” aimed at consolidating political dominance.
Prominent APC figures in the state, including those previously aligned with Senator Barau have begun voicing concern over what they describe as arbitrary and lopsided appointments.
Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi, one of the vocal critics, warned that the exclusion of major party leaders such as Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, federal and state lawmakers, and other core stakeholders could deepen existing divisions within the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
“At a time when Kano APC is already grappling with internal tensions over the 2027 governorship race, any attempt to hijack a national presidential programme will only worsen the crisis,” Abdullahi stated.
He stressed that the Renewed Hope Agenda was conceived as a development initiative, not a tool for political suppression.
Concerned stakeholders are now calling on President Tinubu to intervene urgently.
They urged the President to mandate the APC leadership in Kano, under Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to convene a meeting involving senators, members of the House of Representatives, state lawmakers and other key actors to review and reset the process.
They argue that only a transparent, party-led approach can revive the Renewed Hope Agenda in Kano, restore internal cohesion, and position the APC for stability and electoral success in 2027.
