Rurum Sympathises with Victims of Singa Market Fire, Seeks Government Intervention
A former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has expressed deep sympathy to traders affected by the devastating fire that engulfed Singa Market in Kano over the weekend.
Rurum, who currently represents Rano, Kibiya and Bunkure Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that millions of naira worth of goods were destroyed in the blaze.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Kano, the lawmaker said he was deeply saddened by the tragedy, which left many hardworking traders counting heavy losses.
“It is truly heartbreaking to see hardworking traders lose their investments in such a tragic fire,” he said, extending his heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families. He also prayed for God’s comfort and protection for those affected as they navigate the difficult period.
The former Speaker urged relevant authorities to take urgent steps to prevent future fire outbreaks in markets across the state, stressing the need for improved safety measures.
“We must work together to ensure the safety of our markets. Fire incidents like this not only destroy livelihoods but also affect the overall economy of our communities,” he added.
Rurum commended emergency responders for their swift efforts in containing the fire and called on governments at all levels to provide immediate relief and support to the affected traders.
He specifically appealed to the Federal Government and President Bola Tinubu to intervene and provide additional assistance to speed up relief efforts and the reconstruction of the market.
The lawmaker also urged the Kano State Government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to act promptly in supporting the victims, noting that timely intervention from both state and federal authorities would help traders recover and rebuild their businesses.
Singa Market, one of the busiest markets in Kano, reportedly suffered extensive damage after the fire broke out on Saturday afternoon, with traders lamenting the destruction of goods, stalls and personal property.
