The Arrest of Muhyi Magaji, Politically Motivated ~ Kano State Govt.


The Kano State Government has linked the arrest of the former chairman of the state Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Barrister Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, to an investigation he was conducting.

The government made this known through the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabir Maude (SAN), during a press briefing.

The commissioner said the information they received indicated that more than 40 armed police officers stormed Muhyi’s office around 5:30 pm on Friday, whisking him away to the Kano State Police Command headquarters in Bompai before later moving him to Abuja.
“Up to this moment as I stand here, the Kano State Police Command has failed to provide us with a clear explanation regarding the reason for Muhyi’s arrest or his current condition,” Maude said.

Barrister Maude added that previously, when Muhyi Rimin Gado was heading the commission, the police had invited him to give statements regarding investigations he was conducting on certain companies, including one called Lamash.
“They had invited him in an attempt to stop him from investigating some companies suspected of wrongdoing. Seeing this, he rushed to the Kano High Court seeking an order to restrain the police from arresting or harassing him. But despite that court order, they have gone ahead and arrested him again,” the commissioner of justice stated.

The Kano State Government also accused some politicians, possibly those unhappy with the investigations Muhyi was conducting of using security agencies unlawfully to obstruct a legitimate investigation.

The government said, it would pursue every legal avenue to ensure the protection of the rights and freedom of the former anti-corruption commission chairman.

As at the time of filing this report, neither the Kano State Police Command nor the Abuja police headquarters has issued an official statement regarding the matter.
